Hunter Monument - April 2022

In Dunfermline Cemetery there is a monument to a local lad, William Hunter (17), who died while attempting to rescue a young boy who was drowning in Townhill Loch in July 1886. Such was the response to Hunter’s heroic actions at the time that a fund was launched to erect a monument in his honour.

On 6 November the “group of lads” visited Dunfermline and were given a tour of East End Park, home of Dunfermline Athletic (the Pars), and visited the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum to see the Roll of Honour entry of the nine men before attending Dunfermline Athletic v Morton match. Sadly, Dunfermline lost!!

Dr Colin Firth became the new Hero Fund Convener in April. Colin has been a Trustee since 2017 and been on the Hero Fund subcommittee for the past 3 years. He was a GP in Rosyth, near Dunfermline for 32 years retiring in 2016.

On 12th September 2020, with strict social-distancing measures in place, a memorial was unveiled at Consett Iron Works, County Durham in honour of the men who lost their lives at the works. In particular, the ceremony acknowledged the eleven men who died during the disaster in 1950.
