The Roll of Honour

The Roll of Honour of the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust UK is a beautifully illuminated book that contains hand-inscribed entries relating to over 7000 people whose heroism has been recognised since the foundation of the Trust in 1908.  It is unique to this Hero Fund and currently comprises three leather-bound volumes with a fourth still being added to and is kept at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum in Dunfermline.

The opening pages of volume 1 are on display in the Hero Fund Alcove and other pages can be viewed by prior arrangement. The early pages of the Roll detail mining accidents, incidents of drowning and runaway horses followed by wartime bombing raids. Through these evocative and beautifully inscribed pages, both the heroic deeds and changing social history are laid bare.*

The Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum comprises the cottage where Andrew Carnegie was born and lived for part of his childhood plus the Memorial Hall which was opened in 1928. Louise, Andrew Carnegie’s wife, founded the Museum as a ‘Memorial Treasure House', in the hope that it would prove an inspiration to generations to come.

Today, the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum houses exhibitions, a working 19th-century loom, interactive displays, children’s activities, a shop, and more. Come along and find out about life in 19th century Dunfermline and what it was like to emigrate to America with just a few possessions, as the Carnegie family did. Discover how Andrew Carnegie became the richest man in the world and the father of modern philanthropy.

*If you wish to see a specific entry in the Roll of Honour please contact the Hero Fund Manager, who is based in our Head Office, on herofund@carnegietrust.com to arrange a suitable time for a private viewing. Please do not turn up unannounced at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum and expect to see a specific entry as the museum staff do not have access to all the volumes.
